OpenSTA (Open System Testing Architecture) is a distributed software testing architecture designed around CORBA which was originally developed to be commercial software by CYRANO. The toolset has the capability of performing scripted HTTP and HTTPS heavy load tests with performance measurements. But the architectural design means it could be capable of much more.

OpenSTA has been developed under and for Windows NT4 and 2000 in C++. The initial long term aim was to make the OpenSTA environment totally platform independent, with the current code base this is probably not a reasonable expectation anytime soon. The best way forward towards platform independence would probably be to develop code that interoperates with that of the current project.

The released source has been licensed under the GNU General Public License. OpenSTA follows the same version numbering as many other open source projects, with an odd minor version indicating a developer, or unstable, release. The initially posted version was designated 0.9.0. The decision for this original release to be a developer one was made simply because of the lack of widespread testing outside the CYRANO labs. The current stable release that followed this was designated 1.0.0. After some rest and bug fix releases of this 1.0 series, a 1.1.0 release and code branch for the 1.1 developer series was created. This practice has continued and currently the latest developer series was 1.3 (now frozen, 1.5 may appear sometime given some developer enthusiasm) and a stable(ish) 1.4 series.
